How to mix separated stems

Separating a track is only half the job. The mixer is where stems become useful: muting parts to hear an arrangement, looping four bars until a riff finally lands, or rebalancing a track so the instrument you are learning sits on top. This is not a full DAW and does not try to be — it is built around the handful of things people genuinely do with stems.

Start by muting, not by mixing

The fastest way to understand a song is subtraction. Mute everything except drums and bass and the arrangement usually explains itself in one pass — you hear the form, where the chorus lifts, which bar the fill lands on.

Each stem has its own volume and mute. Use mute for questions ("what is the bass doing here?") and volume for balance ("I need the guitar louder than the record has it").

Loop the passage that is beating you

This is the single most useful feature for learning a part, and the reason to mix stems at all rather than just listening to the record.

  1. Play up to the start of the passage and press Set A.
  2. Let it run to the end of the passage and press Set B. The section now repeats.
  3. Mute everything except the instrument you are learning, plus drums for time.
  4. Play along until it is boring. Clear loop returns you to the full track.

Use EQ to fix, not to sculpt

Every stem has three EQ bands — low, mid and high. On separated audio these are repair tools rather than creative ones.

Cutting bleed from a vocal stem

Kick and floor tom often leave a thud in the vocal stem. Pulling the low band down removes it without touching the voice, because there is very little useful vocal information below about 100 Hz.

Restoring air to a dull stem

Separation sometimes costs a stem its top end, particularly guitars and cymbals in Full band mode. A lift on the high band brings back some of that air. Be sparing — you are amplifying the model's guesswork along with the signal, so artefacts get louder too.

Making room in the middle

When two stems fight, the overlap is almost always in the mids. Cutting the mid band slightly on the part you care about less is more effective than boosting the part you care about more.

Building a rehearsal track

A common workflow: take a song the band is learning, separate it, then mute the instrument each player is covering. The guitarist rehearses against a mix with no guitar; the singer practises against a full band with no vocal.

Set the master to a comfortable level and leave the individual stems near their original balance — you want the track to sound like the record minus one part, not like a remix.

Starting over

Reset mix returns every fader, mute and EQ band to neutral without touching the stems themselves. It is quicker than undoing changes one at a time, and worth using the moment you notice you have lost your reference point. Ears drift; a hard reset is the cheapest way to hear the material honestly again.

How do I make a backing track without one instrument?

Separate the song into stems, then mute the stem for the part you want to play live. Leave the other stems at their original balance so the track still sounds like the record. Use the master volume to set overall level.

How do I loop a section to practise it?

Press Set A at the start of the passage and Set B at the end — the section then repeats continuously. Clear loop returns to the full track. Combining a loop with muting everything except the part you are learning is the fastest way to drill a difficult bar.

Why does EQ make my stem sound worse?

Boosting amplifies separation artefacts along with the signal. On separated audio, cutting the frequencies you do not want almost always sounds better than boosting the ones you do. If a stem needs heavy correction, re-run the separation with fewer stems instead.
